AFCON 2021: The salty qualification of Egypt

Wednesday, the Pharaohs of Egypt painfully validated their ticket for the rest of the competition. Facing the Crocodiles of the Nile at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé, the victory was imperative for Mohamed Salah and his teammates. It is on a narrow score of one goal to zero that Joshua Bondo, the center of the game put an end to this third group match of group D.
The Egyptians showed their hunger for victory from the outset with several attempts off target. Without being impressed, the Sudanese remained physically and tactically present until the 35 minutes when the Egyptian attack broke their defense. From a corner kick on the left side, Mohamed Abdel beat Mohamed Mustapha, the Sudanese goalkeeper. It was with this score that both teams went to break.
After the break, the derby between the two sides of the Nile took on a different dimension but no ball could cross the goal line of any keeper. Sometimes the clumsiness of the attackers saved the goalkeepers from the worst, sometimes it was the goalkeepers’ relaxations that saved their teams from the worst. Ahmed Hegazy, the Egyptian central defender finished Man of the Match.
Egypt finished second in this group with 6 points just behind Nigeria. Sudan and Guinea Bissau finished respectively 3rd and 4th with 1 point each.
