It is a great achievement that Gambia has just realized at the Omnisports Stadium of Kouekong in Bafoussam. First-timers in the final phase of an African Cup of Nations of Football, the Scorpions have made a surprise by beating the Syli National (1-0). Despite the absence of its captain Naby Keita (suspended), Guinea (81st nation in the latest FIFA ranking) was the favorite on paper against Gambia (150th). But, it was without counting on a 4-3-3 well organized defensively, set up by the coach Tom Saintfiet this January 24, 2022.

The Syli National conceded a goal in the 71st minute of the game. After a good pass from Youssoufa Bobb, Musa Barrow hooked the Guinean defender Ibrahima Conté before sending a beautiful curved left-footed shot low into the goal guarded by Ali Keita (1-0). Despite the entry of Morlaye Sylla, the young Guinean prodigy, the Gambian goals will remain untouched.

The two crossbars on the Guinean side will remain in their throat as they could have come back to the score on this action finally sent in the corner by the Gambian defense.

Gambia will go through to the quarterfinals, but it will be without Yusupha Njie who was sent off in the 87th minute after two yellow cards in the space of 15 minutes. Ibrahima Conté, the Guinean defender will also be expelled in the extra time of the match after a foul in the midfield.

Gambia will face the winner of the Cameroon-Comoros match in the quarterfinals.
