At the end of a game rich in emotions, Equatorial Guinea snatched the last ticket of the quarterfinals. The young Central African team left the Malian giant on the brink after an epic penalty shootout. After missing the opportunity to close the game once in the first five shots, Nzalang Nacional had to rely on the efficiency of their young goalkeeper Jesus Owono to defeat the Eagles of Mali for good.

As in its first two participations in the Africa Cup of Nations finals, Equatorial Guinea managed to take the ticket for the quarterfinals in a game where it started at a disadvantage against a team of Mali that has not lost any of its group matches (7 points). A fatal defeat that forces the Eagles of Mali to return home for the second consecutive time in the last 16 after 2019 in Egypt.

In the end, it is a match that ends with only two shots on target in 120 minutes. A shot on target on the Malian side after fourteen attempts and a shot on target on the Equatorial Guinean side after nine attempts.

For this 33rd edition of the CAN organized by its neighbor Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea hopes to go further than in 2012 when it reached the quarterfinals and in 2015 when it was eliminated in the semi-finals. For the ticket to the last four, Equatorial Guinea will face Senegal on January 30th, 2022 at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.
