Cameroon starts the match with a bang. The Egyptians are cornered, not a single minute of respite. The first opportunities are Cameroonian. In the 17th minute, on a corner from the right to the left, Michael Ngadeu Ndadjui missed the opening goal. The ball was headed by the Ghent defender and hit the crossbar of Gabaski’s goal.
Until the 20th minute of play, all the chances are Cameroonian. Cameroon has the control of the game. The Pharaohs are dominated from start to finish, they only need a goal to materialize the domination of the local team. The Indomitable Lions have opportunities but do not manage to concretize. Antonio Conceiçao’s colts rush a little too much in the game. Bakary Papa Gassama sends the two teams to the locker room on a blank score.
From the return of the locker room, it is the same peril for the Cameroonians. They dominate in the game but do not find the net. After several failed attempts, the coach replaces Samuel Oum Gouet with Léa Siliki James. This is the beginning of the fall of the Lions. The Egyptians breathe in the middle of the field. The Pharaohs gradually lead Aboubakar Vincent and his teammates to the penalty shootout.
The public gets impatient, the Lions get stressed; the tension rises, and Carlos Queiroz, the Egyptian coach gets a red card at the end of the regulation time after having disputed a decision of the referee. 90 minutes without anything. The Lions pushed but did not score.
30 minutes are added to divide the two teams, but nothing. The Egyptians have well set up their strategies, they want to go to the penalty shootout where they are well prepared. The fateful penalty shootout finally arrives, and the seven-time African champions are delivered. The Lions miss 3 out of 4 shots, the Egyptians succeed in their first 3. No need to continue, the Lions are eliminated. Antonio Conceiçao has just suffered his first defeat with the national team.
As in 1972, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are eliminated in the semi-finals in Yaoundé.
